Interferon β-1a (also known as interferon β1-α) is a cytokine in the interferon family used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). The IFN-β proteins are produced in large quantities by fibroblasts. It has antiviral activity that is involved mainly in innate immune response. Some studies have shown that interferon injections can reduce the recurrence rate of MS by 18-38%. Interferons are a subclass of cytokines that are produced in the body during illnesses such as the flu to help fight off infections. Interferon-beta can also reduce the number of white blood cells (leukopenia), lymphocytes (lymphocytopenia), and neutrophils (neutropenia), as well as affect liver function.| Typical data
